OC Grand Prix Reaches Milestone in Santa Ana
A milestone was reached recently at the Orange County Grand Prix’s Santa Ana Open, which was played at the new Cabrillo Tennis Center. The tournament marked its 74th year, making in the oldest t
ournament in SoCal.
The official grand opening of Cabrillo Tennis Center will take place in May or June and features an old but newly renovated, three-story Victorian club house. Older residents of Santa Ana remember with affection this historically listed structure which for years graced a city center location which is now slated for Santa Ana’s first high-rise building.
In an agreement worked out with the city and the builder, the former Victorian estate was moved over five miles, at a cost of over $150, 000 to its new and permanent home. The Cabrillo Tennis Center is the home of the Match Point Tennis Academy and will also house the Vic Braden tennis, educational and research facilities.
Grand Prix players were among the first to play in the new facility. Adoption Guild Deadline Approaches
The deadline to enter this year’s Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Classic is May 8. The tournament takes place May 23-25, 30-31 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. Prize money will be offered to finalists in men’s and women’s open singles. Other divisions included men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, men’s 35 doubles and NTRP doubles in 3.5-6.0 categories. UCI Teams Finish Strong
The UC Irvine tennis teams online casino ended their regular seasons on positive notes, both heading into their conference finals as second seeds.
The men finished the Big West Conference season with a 4-1 record (11-14 overall). The Anteaters entered the championship seeded No. 2 for the third straight season and finished the regular season 2-0 with a pair of 6-1 wins over Loyola Marymount and UC Riverside. Freshman Fabian Matthews, sophomore Khunpol Issara, freshman Sam Gould and junior Shimpei Suzuki each went 2-0 in singles on the week.

Saying Goodbye to Two Tennis Tornados
The Orange County tennis community recently lost two stalwarts, Dona Sherbeck and Glenn Turnbull, who passed away recently.
Dona Jeane Sherbeck was 80 when she died recently in Montana. She was a teaching pro as well as a highly ranked senior in SoCal and a top junior in Montana. Possessing a beautiful singing voice, Dona had to choose between music and tennis as a young woman. She chose tennis, but did sing “Violetta” in “La Traviatta” in college and, of course, singing was a hobby throughout her life. Many will remember taking tennis lessons from Dona during her 30 years as a tennis pro. She often taught from her backyard tennis court in Yorba Linda. Her three children were all nationally ranked. Lori now teaches tennis at Deer Valley High School in Utah, David teaches at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport, and Eric played briefly on the pro tour.
Glenn Turnbull passed away at age 90 in Newport Beach. Like Sherbeck, he also had two loves: tennis and the entertainment industry. He was an actor, dancer and choreographer with credits on the Red Skelton Show, the Jack Benny Show and the Dick Van Dyke Show. He taught master tap dancing classes at Orange Coast College into the вЂ90s. Glenn easily transitioned to tennis working with Charlie Eaton at the old Palisades Tennis Club, and was Tennis Director and Manager of the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club He was also was highly ranked in senior tennis for 20 years and was inducted into the Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Classic of Orange County Hall of Fame in 2008.†His daughter, Glenda Winterbotham is assistant tennis director at Balboa Bay.
