JTCC’S ROBIN MONTGOMERY IN US OPEN: The Junior Tennis Champions Center is a miracle of sorts. Hidden away in Maryland’s palmless rust belt, it’s far from the usual sunny sites that traditionally churn out tennis phenoms. But over the years the JTCC has gone against the grain and produced many who excelled. Not only Denis Kudla, No. 94, and the hard-blasting Wimbledon quarterfinalist Alison Riske, but also the vastly entertaining and increasingly mature Frances Tiafoe, whose dad once was a janitor at the site.
The JTCC offers a dazzling array of programs and has been the pathway for hundreds of players going to college. More recently, the emerging star Robin Montgomery did what no one has done since Lindsay Davenport in 1992. Not only did Robin win the US Open junior singles, she also teamed with Ashlyn Krueger to win the junior doubles. All the while on September 17, JTCC backers, alumni and celebrities gathered for the dedication of the Pershing Square Stadium Court.
