Di Giulio, Asamai Leads OC Victors at Sectionals

Di Giulio had to dig deep inside to pull through his 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win in the 14s against Irvine’s Drew Dawson. For a few moments, it looked like Dawson would be in the winner’s circle. He had Di Giulio down 2-4 in the final set and then rallied to 5-5, 40-15, only to see Di Giulio pull off one of several big saves in the match. He later said that he thought he was done in but for the sake of battle, continued to fight and it paid off for him.

Asami had almost as tough a time in dealing with Daniel Faierman in the 16s final, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2. Asami thought he was lucky to win the event, considering he wasn’t playing up to his standards for the week. His backhand came together in the final set however.

There was no less drama in the boys’ 18s when No. 3 seed Daniel Kosakowski of Downey outlasted No. 4 Zach Leslie of San Diego 6-7, 6-7, 7-5 in a 3 1/2 hour affair that saw both players fighting cramps deep in the third set. Kosakowski noticed his opponent cramping and did his best poker move to hide his own fatique, mentally wearing Leslie down to defeat.

The 18s draw opened up when top seed Lawrence Formentera bowed out to Alexander Johnson in the first round. Formentera did win the 18s doubles with Mousheg Hovhannisyan. UCLA-bound Pam Montez ousted Sarah Lee 6-4, 6-2 in girls’ 18s final. As she is about to bid her junior career farewell, Montez will be receiving tons of accolades. She was recently named Athlete of the Year by the Desert Sun for her formiable play in the SCTA as well as for La Quinta High School.

Girls’ 16s champ Mayo Hibi of Irvine received a trophy as well as a sparkling necklace from her mother upon beating Shayne Austin 6-2, 6-3. The trophy is the normal formality. The necklace was the subject of an incentive provided by Mom.

Kaitlyn Christian/Sabrina Santamaria defended their girls’ 18 doubles title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lorraine Guillermo/Desirae Krawczyk. Rounding out the winners list were Logan Smith (B12), Carolyn Xie (G14), Paris Todd (G10), Yuki Chiang (G14) and Bryce Pereira (B10), Joshua Tchan and Amber Walker won the Jim Hillman sportsmanship awards.

Corley/Stewart Lead National Winners at RCI

Team Davis/Davis: Unbeatable

The Davises won the Super Senior event, where the elder team member is between 70-79 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. Losing the second set was only the second set the Davises have lost in all the years playing the event. “They were tough online slots customers. UCLA’s Fleming Still in Coma

UCLA men’s tennis player Jeffrey Fleming of Newport Beach remains in a medically induced coma following an incident where somebody punched him following a country music concert in Dallas, according to UCLA sports information director Marc Dellins.

The 20-year-old attending a Rascal Flatts concert with friends four weeks ago when an unknown man hit him. His family says he was sucker-punched as he was about to catch a taxi after the concert. The blow knocked Fleming to the ground, where his head hit the parking lot concrete. The attacker and others ran away.

Huntington Beach Open on Tap

The Huntington Beach Open will be celebrating its 48th edition when the event takes place Aug. 15-16, 22-23 at the Pacific Sands Cabana Club. Preliminary rounds will also be contested at other local courts.

Laguna Niguel Srs., NTRP Sectional Winners

Winners of the Laguna Niguel Seniors were Brian Matek (M30), Ian Liang (M35), Dana Bozeman (M40), Ross Hessler (M45), David Nowick (M50), Haig Bedrossian (M55), Thomas Bozarth (M60),Danny Dabby (M65), Robert Jones (M70),Gerald Johnson (M75), Bob Seymour (M85), Talmadge/Zebot (MD60), Corley/Lindborg (MD65) and Haskell/Quade (MD70).

The 23rd SCTA NTRP Sectionals were recently contested at the Seal Beach Tennis Center. Winners were Thomas Gunter (M3.5), Bart Wallace (M4.0), Jimmy Nguyen (M4.5), Brian Su (M5.5), Melanie MacRae (W3.5), Camilla Croxton (W4.0), Russo/Shandrew (MD3.5), Moore/Muldrow(MD4.0), Campbell/Chatman (WD3.5) and Johnson/Knutson (MXD5.0).

OC Grand Prix at Mesa Verde

The 27th Annual Mesa Verde Grand Prix tournament held at the club in Costa Mesa saw some “incredibly fine, multi-division, highly competitive tennis and the scene of many intensely close and exciting, photo worthy finishes,” said OCGP’s Dan O’Connor.

At the mid-point of the Grand Prix season, Bruce Beinlich and Fernando Hernandez continue their dominance of the Men’s 5.5 Division for this years honors.
