Marin Sr. Returns to Scott Valley, Harbor Pt., MVTC
The 33rd annual Marin Senior Championships, a National Super Category II event co-hosted by Scott Valley, Harbor Point and Mill Valley, expected upwards of 300 participants June 10-14, and they’ll have just that. Barely.
“When I called, it was the last day to sign up,” said Mill Valley GM Polo Cowan. “They were 100 entries short of the 300 we were expecting. All 100 came on that day.”
The Championships will include men’s and women’s 35s-65s singles, doubles and mixed, plus the under-100 combo cetegory. MVTC will once again play host to the semis and finals, plus a Wednesday evening wine tasting event on June 10 and a buffet and light supper provided by D’Angelos on June 12. Despite helping to host the event, Cowan won’t be participating. The former touring pro pulled his name from the hat three days after entering May 22 due to a shoulder injury he suffered during an exhibition match over the weekend.
San Rafael H.S.’ Hanlon Chan: An Inspiration
San Rafael High School’s Hanlon Chan received Mt. Tam RC’s first-ever Most Inspirational High School Coach award on May 31, part of a new program that rewards local coaches with a Mt. Tam RC summer membership.
“This really shows our appreciation of their input and dedication,” said Mt. Tam GM Rod Heckleman. “Despite a gloomy season, [Chan] continued to inspire and promote the game of tennis and earned the respect of all the other coaches as well as the parents and players on the team.
“He demonstrated that it is the attitude of the coach that ultimately defines the outcome of the year.”
Canon Swim and TC Completes $1M Renovation

Mt. Tam
vs. SFTC Series Continues June 25
Mt. Tam RC will host the second in a series of exhibitions between the club and San Francisco TC on June 25. The clubs played to a draw in an eight-man tennis exhibition featuring eight of the Bay’s best on April 29.
Held indoors nbso at SFTC, the match included two 55-minute rounds of doubles between foursomes from each club. Mt. Tam participants included former NorCal No. 1 Jeff Greenwald, Cal men’s assistant Greg Kennett, current Bangladesh Davis Cup captain Shibu Lal and Mt. Tam tennis director Steve Summer. SFTC’s contingent featured pro Lance Johnson, USF standouts Romain Van Rillas and Fernando Rodriguez, and former Cal men’s No. 1 Nate Jackmon. The rematch is free and open to the public.
Mill Valley Tennis Club Showcases Top Talent
A former World No. 1. A Hall of Famer. A top-40 doubles phenom. And the club’s head pro. Mill Valley TC could hardly call this an exhibition.
Jared Palmer, Paul Goldstein, Aleco Preovolos and Polo Cowan put on a surprise exo June 26 during the club’s weekly Friday night BBQ, with Palmer/Preovolos pairing up to win a pro-set 8-6 before taking a 10-6 tiebreaker challenge over their host — Cowan — and his partner Goldstein, a former ATP touring pro who reached No. 40 in the world in doubles in ‘07.
Palmer, who ascended to No. 1 in the world in doubles in ‘00, won a pair of Grand Slam doubles titles during his career, including the ‘95 Australian Open and ‘01 Wimbledon. Preovolos was a four-year All-American and Hall of Fame inductee at UC-Davis.
“We usually get really good Open-level players,” Cowan said. “This was a big surprise.”
YTA Program Spared (At Least for Now)
Marin City’s newly launched Youth Tennis Advantage program was saved during a recent round of cuts by the non-profit, which eliminated programs at the following parks: Ella Hill Hutch (San Francisco), Young Blood Coleman (San Francisco), DeFremery (Oakland) and Bushrod (Oakland). The downsizing cut the Bay Area after-school tennis program from eleven sites to seven. Marin City will host a limited program over the summer. YTA plans to resume the remaining seven sites to a more robust level in the fall.
