WTA First: 10 Nations In Top 10

108632181If you aren’t yet convinced that this game has gone global, just take a look at the latest WTA world rankings.  For the first time ever, the WTA’s top 10 features players from 10 different countries. Eleven different nations are represented among the top 11 spots, and 30 different countries among the top 60.

The top 10 as of Jan. 31 follows:

1. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)

2. Kim Clijsters (BEL)

3. Vera Zvonareva (RUS)

4. Francesca Schiavone (ITA)

5. Samantha Stosur (AUS)

6. Venus Williams (USA)

7. Li Na (CHN)

8. Jelena Jankovic (SRB)

9. Victoria Azarenka (BLR)

10. Agnieszka Radwanska (POL)

Shahar Peer has reached a career-high ranking of No. 11, a record for an Israeli.

Francesca Schiavone becomes the first Italian to break into the top five, while Australian Oipen champ Kim Clijsters of Belgium ascends to No. 2 for the first time since 2006. After making history in Melbourne, AO runner-up Li Na becomes the first Chinese player to ascend to No.7.
