what she knew about Serena Williams’ injury (the reigning U.S. Open champ saw the laceration during their big-money, record setting Belgian exo), Mary Carillo told IT the details of what occurred on the night of Williams injury, as based on her conversations with Serena’s camp.

Williams, who had bristled big time over the World Cup officiating, openly questioning why we should consider soccer a sport, had actually become quite a soccer fanatic and wanted to be in Germany to catch the flavor of it all. So she and her nephew were in a Munich bar/restaurant when Germany lost to Spain. Suddenly, the place got out of control, so Serena (who was wearing sandals) backed away from the bar and, in the darkness of the nightspot, felt a pain. A piece of glass went into her foot, creating an inch-deep laceration.

“All of a sudden she felt pain,” said Carillo. “There was glass and blood everywhere.”

Williams immediately saw a doctor, who gave her six inner and six outer stitches. Nonetheless, she played the huge exhibition in front of 40,000 the next day. She then came home and saw a specialist, who operated on her. According to reports, Serena will not be in Ashe Stadium to watch her sister Venus’ first-round match against Roberta Vinci, and despite reports to the contrary, will likely not play in Tokyo.
