DiGiulio Takes Little Mo Crown

Austin DiGiulio, who trains at the Advantage Tennis Academy, won the Little Mo International, held Dec, 15-19 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The nine-year-old, who defeated Courage Crawford 6-0, 6-2, has been training for the past two years under the direction of ATA coaches Mahmoud Karim and Mitch Bridge.

“Austin’s a powerhouse,” said Karim. “He has the determination and skills needed to help him reach great potential.”

Former Irvine Resident Reaches AO Junior Final

Former Advantage Tennis Academy standout Sean Berman made a great impression playing for his adopted homeland as the onetime Irvine resident reached the final of the Australian Open Junior tournament.

The unseeded 17-year-old had a dream run in his debut Open, defeating No. 3 Jason Kubler, No. 6 Marton Fucsovics, No. 10 Guilherme Clezar and No. 16 Jozef Kovalik en route to the final, where he was edged by Brazil’s Tiago Fernandes 7-5 6-3.

Berman’s family recently shifted from Orange County to settle in his mother’s native Melbourne. Born in Johannesburg in ‘93, Berman’s family moved to New Zealand, living there until Sean was 12. The Bermans then moved to Irvine, their home until last year. Although not yet a naturalized Australian, all Berman’s paperwork has been approved. UC-Irvine Vies for Top Big West Spot

The UC-Irvine men are positioning for the future as local standout Ryan Cheung of University H.S. signed a Letter of Intent to play for the Anteaters casino online next season, according to head coach Trevor Kronemann. Cheung is currently ranked No. 77 in the TennisRecruiting.net national rankings, and is No. 13 in the SCTA 18s.

Orange County Grand Prix Off and Running

The Orange County Grand Prix has launched another season. The Grand Prix features weekend tournaments taking place at venues throughout the county. Top point earners compete in the Masters event in January.

The 27th edition of the Masters took place recently in the desert.
