Barely a year after tying the knot, and only weeks after they were seen smiling and holding hands at the U.S. Open, Chris Evert and golfer Greg Norman have announced their separation.
In a statement released just days before Norman is to captain the International team at the President’s Cup at San Francisco’s Harding Park, the couple said, “We will remain friends and supportive of one another’s family.”
Evert and Norman were married on June 28, 2008, in the Bahamas. This is Evert’s third marriage. She was most recently wed to Olympic skier Andy Mill, with whom she had three children. They were divorced in ‘06. Her first marriage was to British tennis player John Lloyd. Norman was previously married to Laura Andrassy, whom he divorced in ’06. His divorce settlement was reported to have surpassed the $100 million mark.
Sports Illustrated recently called the couple “the sports equivalent of Fred and Ginger, dancing cheek to cheek across a mirrored floor.” In the April 2009 article, Evert’s younger brother, John, who runs the Evert Academy, gushed, “They’re goofy in love. They hold hands and kiss in public, and you don’t want to be around them in a private setting. I’m like, ‘Guys, could you take it somewhere else?'”
