FRIDAY, JULY 3 – Roger Federer had never lost a Wimbledon semifinal and today was no exception. Even though Tommy Haas served well and played a solid, aggressive match, he was no match for the superb and steamrolling Swiss.
Federer continued play the seamless tennis he’s shown throughout the fortnight, winning 75 percent of his first-serve points, clocking 49 winners and converting 38 of 43 net points. The closeness of the 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-3 score is an indication of the high level of play from the 31-year-old German, who was playing in his first Wimbledon semifinal.
The list of records is piling up for Federer: seven straight Wimby finals, first male player to 20 Grand Slam finals, 16 of 17 straight Slam finals and, of course, the outlandish 21 straight Slam semifinals. A victory on Sunday would crown him the grandest of the Slam winners as he would pass Pete Sampras with 15 major victories.
Roddick Breaks UK’s Heart
FRIDAY, JULY 3 – Andy Murray had more winners, less unforced errors and higher winning percentages on first and second serves than Andy Roddick. Sounds like an easy win, right?
But, Murray won only 52 percent of his first serve points and lost the Wimbledon semifinal to Roddick 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(5).
