Dodo Cheney Wins 90 Hard Court Nationals
OK, so La Jolla’s Dodo Cheney is a living legend and she’s the tennis equivalent of the Energizer Bunny. Not satisfied with 380 national titles she just keeps on winning ‘em! At the USTA National Women’s 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 National Hard Court Championships held at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, she collected gold in the 90 singles and doubles.
William J. Kellogg, president of the club and the tournament head honcho, pulled out all the stops for the women who flew in from all parts of the country to try for that elusive gold ball that comes with winning a national championship.
Top seed Susan Wright (CO) won the 50 singles over second seed Carolyn Nichols (Lodi) 6-0, 7-6. Local favorites Robin Harris/Tracey Thompson triumphed against Jackie Heston (Garden Grove)/Tracy Worley Hagen (Tustin) 6-2, 6-3. You could hear the crowd cheering for their hometown gals all the way into the banquet room where the cocktail party for the players was underway. Harris also picked up the bronze ball in the singles with a nice 6-2, 6-3 win over Kathy Vick (TX).
Second seed Martha Downing (Shingle Springs) fought off a tough top seeded Brenda Carter (SC) to claim the 60 singles 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Downing/Kathleen Bennett (Rancho Mirage downed defending champs Carter/Betty Wachob (FL) 6-4,, 6-2 for the 60 doubles crown.
Pasadena’s Dorothy Mathiesson edged Dori Devries (NV) in the 70 singles. Claudia Giacomini (Sunnyvale)/Norma Veal (Palm Desert) quelled a tenacious Devries/Roz King (San Diego) 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
The 80 singles was an all Florida final with Doris Lutz prevailing over Louise Russ 6-7, 6-2, 7-5. Russ took the gold in the 80 doubles with partner Doris Stephens (San Clemente), beating Lutz/Elaine Mason (Fresno). And Cheney beat Mary Hill (Claremont) 6-0, 6-2 in the 90 singles and with Jean Harris (Carmel) added the 90 doubles title to her resume.
Sharing the beautiful beachside courts during the women’s events was the LJB&TC Senior Men’s Invitational. Winners were: James Upton (60s); Leland Housman (65s); Lloyd Goldwater (70s); Buddy Lomax (75s); Arnold Pompan (80s).
USTA Mixed Teams Compete at SoCal Sectionals
The USTA Mixed Doubles League is competitive, but with a social twist. For the teams that won locally and advanced to the SoCal Sectional Championships it’s with the hope of going on to the Nationals. San Diego North County winners included: 7.0 Morgan Run Resort, Roberta Schrott, Capt.; 8.0 Pala Mesa Resort, Bruce Brenkus, online casino Capt.; 9.0 Carmel Valley Rec Center, Becky Kuba, Capt.; 10.0 Carmel Valley Rec Center, Jami Jones, Capt. Janet Podney captained San Diego’s Barnes Tennis Center 9.0 team.
Hurlbut, Hopp Lead National Winners at Morgan Run
Morgan Run Resort welcomed the super senior men to the USTA National Hard Court Championships. Tennis director Tom Zeman was also the tournament director. In the 75s Neil Hurlbut (AZ) collected gold after a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 battle against Buddy Lomax (TX). George McCabe (OH)/Charles Nelson (Santa Monica) scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Hurlbut/Dennis Nielson.
The 80s division was almost a “last man left standing” event. Despite injuries that forced withdrawals and retirements, Clem Hopp (FL) won the singles over Graydon Nichols (Hanford) 6-2, 6-4. Jason Morton (AZ)/Leonard Bunge (FL) upset Nichols/Wayne Hippenstiel (Carmichael) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 for the doubles crown. Magers Puts Court Cup Team in Winner’s Circle
The USA Margaret Court Cup Women’s 45 team headed to glorious mobile casino Mallorca, Spain (home of Rafa Nadal), to try to capture the ITF World Team Championship. San Diego’s Gretchen Magers was a key player as were Frances Chandler (TN) who doubled as the captain, Mariana Hollman (NC) and Mary Dailey (FL). They are four of the top nationally ranked players in the US.
A very strong Australian team was their first opponent. Chandler handled the No. 2 singles easily; Magers won at No. 1 singles and Hollman/Dailey pulled out a three-setter for the USA 3-0 score. They beat Estonia and Sweden, both 3-0, to gain a slot in the main draw where they defeated Great Britain 2-1. France was their next victim and they faced the defending champion Czech Republic team. On a beautiful, but extremely windy day, Hollman toughed out a No. 2 singles 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 win for the United States to put them up 1-0. Magers again showed her mettle as she trounced her opponent 6-0, 6-1 to put the USA in the winner’s circle.
Barnes Hosts National Father/Daughter & Mother/Son Hard Courts
The real name of the national tournament held at the Barnes Center under semi-drizzly May grey days is the USTA National Father/Daughter, Senior, Super Senior & Ultra Senior FD & Mother Son Hard Court Championships. Whew!
Dads and their daughters and mothers and their sons came from all over the country to compete. The Father/Daughter gold ball winners were the Joelsons- Ashley (TX)/Brian (OR) who beat Sabrina/Brian Man Son Hing (Calabasas) 6-3, 6-1. The Senior F/D team of Mariel DeYoung (La Jolla)/Emil Verban (IL) dropped Boston’s Stephanie/William White 6-2, 6-0. Super Senior F/D winners were Krista O’Connor (San Juan Capistrano)/Herman Ahlers (NV) in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 battle with locals Jodi Neuman-Rea/Don Neuman. Ultra (0ver 80) Senior F/D saw Carolyn /Graydon Nichols take a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ann Jacobs/Richard Phelps (MA). An all-local Mother/Son final saw Susan/Alex Yermanos triumph over Tina/Guy Giubilato 6-0, 6-3.
Masi Named USD Coach
USD announced Brett Masi is the new men’s tennis head coach, replacing Tom Hagedorn who lost a brave battle with leukemia in March. Masi was the assistant men’s tennis coach at USC and watched his team win the NCAA team title several days before accepting his new position. Torero sophomore Dean Jackson (Germany) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Div. I Championship on a win over 7th seed Michael Venus of LSU, garnering All-American honors.
The USD women are ranked 57th in the nation. Juliette Coupez, a freshman, was selected to the All-WCC Singles First Team and senior Tammy Kevey/freshman Maja Sujica made the All WCC Doubles First Team. The San Diego State men’s team ended the season with a 15-22 overall record. The lady Aztecs were 17-9 overall this year and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
