Vince Dente Classic Ahead at Avila Bay

Known for its popular player parties and competitive open divisions, the 19th annual Vince Dente Classic will once again take place over the long holiday weekend of May 22-25 at the Avila Bay Club in

Avila Beach. The tournament contains men’s and women’s singles and doubles events in the open divisions, mixed Open doubles, A-B-C categories, as well as men’s 40s, 50s and 60s singles. The Memorial Weekend event will hold its player party on both Saturday and Sunday this year. Ventura’s Dusty Kemick won last year’s men’s Open. Once again, $3,000 in prize money will be handed out.

Cal State Northridge Women

The Cal State Northridge women’s team ended its home season with a tight 4-3 loss to Loyola Marymount to fall to 9-12 on the year. Evgeniya Vertesheva, Nina Jaworowski and Nigora Sirojiddinova all earned singles wins for the Matadors, while Vertesheva teamed with Brooke Doane to win their top-seeded doubles match. Vertesheva and Doane are now 16-2 on the season, all at the No. 1 position.

Sirojiddinova improved to 11-10 on the year with a straight-set win at No. 5 to earn CSUN’s final point. Before the match, the Matadors held a pre-match ceremony for the team’s lone senior, Sandra Kukla. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in journalism at CSUN.

109th Ojai Kicks Off

It’s time for tea and tennis in Ojai come April 23-26 as the 109th annual Ojai event takes place at historic Libbey Park. The men’s and women’s Open division prize money has increased once again this year and tea, brewed in silver urns and served in china cups to players and spectators attending this annual spring ritual, will once again be served. The Ojai Tennis Club has hosted the event since 1896, when it was founded by NCAA doubles champion William L. Thacher to promote amateur tennis in California.

Ojai has showcased a long list of tennis greats, including Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Tracy Austin, Arthur Ashe and local favorites, and the Bryan twins, whose names appear among the 85 on the “Wall of Fame,” identifying those players who have competed in The Ojai, and gone on to win one or more Grand Slams. Cal Poly’s Foy Named Player of Week

After recording a perfect 4-0 record in duals matches in one week, junior Robert Foy was selected as the Big West Men’s Tennis Tri-Athlete of the Week. Foy defeated Ted Kelly of Stanford to record the Mustangs lone point against the Cardinal, then proceeded to record three more victories in leading Cal Poly to a 3-1 week. The award was the first career weekly award for Foy and the third for the Mustangs this season, as top player and freshman Andre Dome has received the accolade twice. Foy has a team-best 13 victories this season and has equaled sophomore Drew Jacobs for the team lead with nine dual wins.

Seniors Maria Malec and Whitney Peterson won in their final home matches, leading the Cal Poly women オンライン カジノ to a 5-2 upset of No. 56 Oregon. The Mustangs closed the regular season at 12-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big West. In her final home match, Malec, a four-year Mustang, cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4.”It was a really exciting day for us and probably our best win of the year,” said head coach Hugh Bream after his team beat a ranked foe for the first time this season.

Of Note: Thousands Oaks 2nd, Azeka Wins Award

Kyle McMorrow, Marcos Giron, Alex Johnson, Tyler Bridges and Brendon Josephson were among the Thousand Oaks High players who led the Lancers to second place at the 10th annual All-American Invitational Team Tournament held in Newport Beach. Thousand Oaks fell to University High of Irvine 7-1 in the final.

The USTA Tennis On Campus program announced its inaugural Club of the Year Award for the 2008-2009 Tennis On Campus season with one Southern California school and one individual school earning accolades. The University of California, Davis club team was the team of the year with UCLA’s club team receiving honorable mentions.

The Tennis On Campus Leader of the Year Award went to Steven Azeka of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. Azeka is the current president of the Cal Poly team. The award is designed to honor an individual college student leader for significant contributions made to the USTA Tennis On Campus program at his or her school. Azeka has led his Tennis On Campus team in a range of different ventures, and has implemented several programs to increase tennis awareness and give back to the community. Azeka created the Southern California Tennis Committee that acts as a resource and helps other Tennis On Campus programs in Southern California.

The Loyola Marymount men’s tennis team was victorious during the first annual Betty Werner Cup beating Dartmouth, 4-3, as the Lions hosted their largest home crowd all season. The LMU community came out to show their support and pay their respects to the late senior associate athletics director. Darren Potkey represented the SCTA at the event with Jane Goodman, director in charge of umpires for Southern California, and a NCAA National Championship representative in attendance as well.

The UCSB women finished their regular season by taking down Eastern Washington and improved to 15-5 on the season. …The No. 75 UC Santa Barbara men’s team completed its regular season at home with a 6-1 win over Loyola Marymount on Senior Day.
