Fallbrook Open May 30-31, June 6-7
The 35th annual Fallbrook Open Tournament offers a wide array of divisions. The Open events have $3,000 prize money based on the number of entrants in each of those divisions. There is also the men’s 65s, the family events (Father/Son, Father/Daughter, Mother/Son, and Mother/Daughter) as well as NTRP. The family divisions are chance to see the parents, who often hit tennis balls to their children to get them started in the sport, pair with their offspring…and in some cases, the youngster gets a chance to “hold up” their parent on the court. Major Market is a lead sponsor and net proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of North County. This is the 28th year Dorothy Roth has run the tournament and she estimates that $90,000 plus has been given over the years, although with the economy this year, she is concerned there won’t be as much to donate.

Lopez Announces Quick Start Courts Under Construction
San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club tennis director and longtime voulnteer Angel Lopez recently won the prestigious Olive Pierce award. Few have given as much back to the game as Lopez, who has coached pro champs, inspired adults and ambitious juniors.
The club will begin construction of four permanent 36-foot long QuickStart courts. “These courts will be added to our facility in keeping with our commitment to junior tennis and to young families who want their children to learn to play,” said Angel Lopez.
Doug Allred, the club owner, approved the addition of the courts which will serve children as young as four years old. They should be playable by summer, just in time for SDT&RC’s six-week mini camps for youngsters aged five to 12.
The QuickStart format is perfect because the court is sized for children and the balls don’t bounce as high so kids rally longer and pick up the game faster while still learning the solid fundamentals that will form the base for their tennis. Lopez, who will celebrate 30 years at SDT&RC in December, considers junior tennis a major priority.
