USC Looks for NCAA Success

The No. 6 USC men’s tennis team plowed through No. 18 Arizona for the Trojans sixth straight win and fifth consecutive Pac-10 victory, helping USC move up to an 18-4 overall record and 5-0 mark in Pac-10 matches. The 7-0 win over the Wildcats was sparked by a doubles sweep and a string of straight-set singles wins at the bottom of the lineup to key victory for USC. Clinching the match in singles was freshman Daniel Nguyen’s 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 5 slot. The win puts conference undefeated USC within reach of the Pac-10 title with one last dual match remaining against crosstown rival UCLA.

With just one match remaining, the No. 9 USC women’s tennis team clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 Conference title with a perfect 7-0 record. The USC women have never won the Pac-10 team title. With a 19-2 record, USC reeled off an 11-match win streak and will enter the NCAAs Division I team final May 14-19 at College Station, Texas, as one of the favorites.

A huge reason for their success has been the play of senior Amanda Fink who anchored two huge Pac-10 wins for the Trojans. The first was an upset over No. 8 California and then the snapping of a 50-match losing streak against No. 11 Stanford. For her performance, Fink earned her first career Pac-10 player of the week honor.

Playing doubles with Gabriela Niculescu, Fink’s doubles wins clinched that point for USC in both matches. Fink also extended her singles winning streak out to 12 consecutive victories with straight-set wins in singles in both dual matches.

Fink is ranked No. 26 in the nation in singles and No. 10 with Niculescu in doubles.
