Juricova and Zerbini Top Cal Charts
Amanda Augustus’ No. 9-ranked women’s team (17-4) received their 28th consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships.
Last year, Cal defeated Duke, No.1 ranked Northwestern and Baylor before falling to UCLA in the NCAA title tilt. Five Golden Bears finished the season ranked in the top 60, which certainly helped them finish their regular season on a six-match winning streak: Jana Juricova (No. 11), Marina Cossou (No. 26), Bojana Bobusic (No. 32) Mari Andersson (No. 41) and Claire Ilcinkas (No. 54). Juricova registered a 33-6 overall record, won Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors and was a All-Pac-10 First Team pick. Pac-10 Second Teamers include Andersson, Bobusic and Cossou. The No. 7-ranked doubles team of Andersson/Juricova will represent Cal at the NCAA Doubles Championships, one of only eight seeded teams in the 32-team field.

Double Digits: Broadway Bound?
Brimming with high-voltage tunes, whimsical humor and surprising gravitas, Double Digits, an original musical comedy by Abby Simons (the 18-year old daughter of IT publisher Bill Simons) and composer Nathan Kersey-Wilson, wowed packed Berkeley houses in its April debut. With both an uncanny eye and deft touch, Double Digits offered an edgy (Holden Caulfield say howdy to Broadway) exploration of “it stinks-to-me” self-doubt and the daunting stress kids endure these days. Pressure and pop quizzes, pimples and Proust, here the mantra is simple — “Don’t mess up or you’re screwed,” while the answers are nuanced, wise and witty. The play, which featured 13 hummable Broadway-esque songs, with jazz overtones and hints of Kurt Weil, left ‘em dancing in the aisles.
