Breakers to Host Chang, McEnroe

Newly inducted Hall of Famer Michael Chang and veteran Hall of Famer John McEnroe will head the list of players visiting the Newport Beach Breakers of WorldTeamTennis during the July season.

Chang was drafted by the Breakers’ division rival Sacramento and McEnroe returns to the New York Sporttimes. The schedule has yet to be drafted but players were designated to visit Newport Beach during the recent WTT marquee player draft. The Breakers did not participate in the draft this year but will partipate in another draft of roster players March 31.

Santa Ana Open Returns

Not all revivals are held in tents, feature miracle cures or the sounds of joyous chanting. The good news however, is that the rebirth of the Santa Ana Open. Founded in 1935 and continued intermittently as a community based, City of Santa Ana endorsed, annual recreational happening of major proportion, the “new Santa Ana Open has been added to the exciting calendar of the Orange County Grand Prix series of annual tennis events.

Scheduled for two consecutive weekends (March 27, 28-29, April 3-5) the 74th Annual Santa Ana Open will be conducted at the Cabrillo Tennis Center, which is the home of the Match Point Tennis Academy. Elson De Cantuaria, former pro player and founder/director of Match Point said, “We’re pleased to be a part of the tradition of this event and invite all local, private and public court players to participate.”

Featuring both doubles and singles, this will be the first Grand Prix tournament of the year. The previously scheduled Tustin Hills Tennis Club event for February was delayed and rescheduled because of rain.

Fullerton’s New Class Aims for Improvement

Cal State Fullerton’s women’s team had a rough start to the season. But this time it was the weather and not opposing Big West Conference teams that got in the way. Rain washed out its two opening matches putting the team’s schedule in a funk.

The finally got a match in against Cal State Northridge, losing 7-0. The absence of Wiesener also allowed Doran to take the court for the first time in ‘09. The change of draws didn’t help the Titans much in singles though. CSF junior Brandy Andrews, playing in the fifth position, was the closest Titans player to earn a set with her 4-6 loss to Paluch. This season’s team is a rounded mix of new talent and veterans. Bullock joins casino online the team from Mater Dei High along with Fiedelia Castillo from Century High in Santa Ana. The remainder of the team is made up of sophomores and seniors. Andrews is the lone junior on the squad.

Advantage Academy

Advantage Tennis Academy, an Irvine-based boarding academy for aspiring juniors, was pleased with the progress of its students at the recent Snowball Intermountain Sectional held in Salt Lake City. Chris Cooperider of Denver placed second in Boys 18s; Chrissy Uriarte (pictured) of Las Vegas earned sixth in the Girls 18s and Kylie Peek of Park City casino online placed fifth in Girls 16s.

Coto Pro Thinks Fast and Saves a Life

Coto de Caza tennis director David Page has had to field some tough volleys in his career, but his toughest came one day in the middle of January when one of the club’s adult players and a friend of Page’s collapsed and nearly red lined, that is he lost his pulse and had a scant of a heartbeat.

Fortunately for Page, he had 12 years of CPR training under his belt and quickly reacted. As paramedics were called, Page used a mobile defibrillator to perform CPR,. As Orange County Fire medics arrived, Page gave the man another zap and he eventually started to breath on his own. Authorities rushed him to Mission Hospital where he further recovered.

Fire officials credited Page for saving the man’s life. Page said he was just happy that all those years of CPR training paid off. Added Eric Boberg, general manager of Coto de Caza: “David did an incredible job in saving a member’s life. His training and quick reaction time were paramount to the success of this situation. David is a great leader in the club and an outstanding person.”

New Look for UCI Men

The UC Irvine men’s team has a new look with six new players plus one red shirt. Thought it’s his third season, it’s really the first season where coach Trevor Kronemann’s recruiting efforts will be on display. He was able to lure some lofty talent from SoCal including Poway’s Steven Henderson, Corona del Mar’s Oscar Fabian Matthews and well as Peninsula’s Tyler Bowman and Jon Kazarian, all top SCTA juniors. In addition, Sam Gould, who red-shirted last year, is ready to play as are frosh Emmett Shiras (broadcaster and former pro Leif’s son) and OC native Wes Miller also will finish his college career with UCI after transferring from Arizona State, which lost its tennis program.

Kronemann will have to rely on the younger players to come through. In early season matches, Henderson and Matthews looked especially good. Henderson upset Alex Moreno of Pepperdine 7-6 in the third set and then downed George Batrakov of BYU. He and Matthews beat Bratrakov/Hwang in doubles against BYU. However, the Eaters lost both matches 4.-3 against BYU and 6-1 to the Waves.
