Cal Poly Looks Ahead

Cal Poly almost took the doubles point but sophomores Alexander Sonesson and Blake Wardman fell in a tiebreaker (9-8, 10-7) at the No. 3 spot. Dome isn’t the only first-year playing making noise as fellow freshman Sebastian Bell played at No. 2 against Pepperdine, falling to No. 51 Omar Altmann and taking him to a second-set tiebreaker. Robert Foy at No. 4 took a set off nationally ranked No. 58 Mahmoud Kamel. Head coach Justin McGrath will play Sonesson at No. 3 while Drew Jacobs (No. 5) and Brian McPhee (No. 6) and Darryn young (doubles) fill out the lineup.

The Mustang women welcomed transfer Suzie Matzenauer casino online from Northwestern with open arms and she hasn’t disappointed already being named Big West Athlete of the Week for her role in her team’s 7-0 win over Cal State Northridge. Playing at No. 1 singles, Matzenauer dropped just two games in singles and teamed with Amy Markhoff for a win in doubles. The junior from Tacoma, Wash., improved to 12-3 overall on the season and 4-1 when teaming with Markhoff. Other top players include senior Maria Malec, currently ranked No. 120 by the ITA, freshman Jocelyn Davis and returners juniors Brittany Blalock and Diane Filip.

Bryans Wins 3rd Aussie Open Title

Bob and Mike Bryan won their third Australian Open doubles title with a 2-6 7-5 6-0 victory over India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles. With the victory, the Camarillo twins reclaimed the No. 1 ranking. The wins won their seventh Slam, moving them into a tie for second for most men’s Slam doubles titles in the Open Era with John Newcombe/Tony Roche and Peter Fleming/John McEnroe Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde hold the record with 11 Slam doubles titles.
